DIRECTIONS AND CORNERS IN VAASTU SHASTRA

DIRECTIONS AND CORNERS
There are four main directions:
a) East
b) West
c) North
d) South
And, four intermediate directions:
a) North-East (NE)
b) North-West (NW)directions
c) South-East (SE)
d) South- West (SW)
The entire universe rests in an endless space which has no directions. The Sun, the stars and the several other planets like the Earth and the Moon are revolving and rotating in this ethereal space in their respective orbits. Sun is a star close to the earth and emits light and heat to the humanity, whereby we are able to live and feel the presence and direction of the objects. If we face the rising sun, the facing direction is termed as EAST, behind us would WEST, towards our left would be NORTH and towards our right would be SOUTH.
These intermediate directions are more important, as they have in them the effects of two directions, which make an angle in the formation of that intermediate direction. Hence the inten'nediate directions have more specialties than the cardinal directions.

Significance of Eight Directions:
As per the science of Vaastu all the eight directions have their own respective influences on the human beings.
1. East is called the paternal side. If the vacant space in east is covered completely the House may become a male less property.
2. South East (Agneya) begets health.
3. South brings prosperity, happiness and tranquility.
4. South West (Nairuthi) is responsible for attitude, behavior and mortality.
5. West brings progress, pomp and pride.
6. North West (Vayuvya) governs relations with other which may vary from cordiality to hostility.
7. North is the maternal side. If it is not kept vacant the house may become desert due to female mortality and remains as a house without a female member.
8. East (lshanya) ensures continuity of lineage through able male progeny. It ensures wealth and prosperity.

A casual observation of all the eight directions reveals the effects 0n the residents of the house, as “Face is the index of the mind”.
The ideal shape of a plot or site is a square or a rectangle possessing four sides viz. , east, west, north, south. Every side has two directions. In order to facilitate proper identification of intermediate directions each lateral side has been divided into nine equal parts.
  1. Two terminal parts out of nine, of the eastern lateral side towards North makes North East- East. Two terminal parts out of nine of the eastern lateral side towards south makes South East -East, And the remaining five parts are to be construed as eastern portion.
  2. Two terminal parts out of nine southern lateral sides towards east makes South East South, two terminal parts of the southern lateral side towards west make South West South and the remaining five parts are to be construed as southern position.
  3. Two terminal parts out of nine of the western lateral side towards south make South West- West, two terminal parts of the western lateral side towards north make North West- West, and the remaining five parts are to be construed as western portion
  4. Two terminal parts out of nine of the northern lateral side towards east make North East-North, two terminal parts of the northern lateral side towards west make North West North and the remaining five parts are to be construed as northern position.
Above subdivision enables the identification of the intermediate directions in the following manner:
(a)North East: Northeast is composed of four pads viz. two parts of the lateral side called North-East-North and two parts of the eastern lateral side called North East- East.
(b)South East: Southeast is composed of four parts viz, two parts of the eastern lateral side called South-East-East and two parts of the southern lateral side called South-East-South.
(c) North West: is composed of four parts viz.; two parts of the northern lateral side called North-West-North and two parts of the western lateral side called the North West-West.
(d)South West: Southwest is composed of four parts viz. Two parts of the southern lateral side called South-West-South and two parts of the western lateral side called South West-West.
Thus various directions and intermediate directions are to be identified and ensured at perfect angles, right from the stage of excavation of foundation till the stage of laying roof, in order to reap the best results of the science of Vaastu.

The Devnagri names of each direction and corner are as follows:
North; Uttar
North East; Ishanya
East; Purva
South East; Agneya
South; Dakshin
South West; Nairutya
West; Paschim
North West; Vayuvya
Centre; Brahamsthan
Centre Point; Brahambindu
